Life Boats

Have you ever looked at a cruise ship and truly noticed the lifeboats along the sides?  How about the pods on the decks for the life rafts?  The regulations regarding life boats and life rafts ensure that there will be more than enough capacity to get 125% of the ship capacity to safety.  Can you imagine a ship that only had enough for 10 or 20% of the capacity? They are really expensive, and ideally are never used.  So they sit.  They require maintenance, which means ongoing cost and replacement costs at their end of life.  But you would not want to be on a ship that did not have them, especially if there were not enough.  Imagine being in the life boat, looking at folks trying to get in, but the boat becomes over capacity and capsizes?  Who would ever want to be in either the position of being in the water, or being in an overcrowded boat?  It is a terrifying scenario, for sure.

So, why lifeboats?  Because if the situation comes around that you need them, you will definitely want them, and you will want enough to carry everyone.  We could learn a lot from the cruise lines and shipping industry, looking at why and how many lifeboats and rafts they have.

Emergency Preparedness is like that.  When done properly, Emergency Preparedness (aka Prepping) is like building a life raft for you and your family.  If the storms of life hit, you are in a much better position to make it through in good shape.  Your neighborhood, your Town, your County and State.  Our Nation.  This is a huge cruise ship we are on.  The more people who build their own lifeboats and life rafts, the better off all of us are.  In fact, if we all do our part, and a little bit more, maybe we will be in a positions to help someone who falls short when the time comes?  No one else can do it for us, we need to take responsibility for ourselves and our families; anything above that is icing on the cake (and well worth it).

So build a solid lifeboat, talk to your neighbors and get them to do the same.  Work together and make a plan.  It is harder to do these days with people so increasingly busy and isolated, but it is well worth it.  The more we plan ahead of time, and get our lifeboats in robust shape, the more we can enjoy the cruise, and those we are with.

So, do you have a lifeboat for you and your family?
